When copying from documents which have been manually placed on the glass, we recommend that the document feeder or platen cover is closed or lowered as far as possible. This ensures that the original is kept flat and in focus on the glass, and minimises the visual distraction to others in the vicinity. If many copies are to be made from a book or other thick object, placing paper or white card around it will reduce the light emission and minimise toner consumption.
During the copying process, the document is illuminated by either several small quartz halogen lamps mounted on the scanning carriage or by a pair of stationary flash tubes. As with all such lamps, a small percentage of their output is in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum. However, the platen glass will absorb most of the shorter wavelengths and the amount emitted above the glass can be considered to be negligible. Exposure is very much less in duration and intensity than would be the case from a desk lamp or similar. The safety data sheet for the machine states that it is "Below the threshold limit value for U.V. radiation". Looking away while copying will also avoid any temporary discomfort from the eyes adjusting to the bright light. No special protection is required for the operator, and the machines are safe and fit for the purpose for which they are supplied.
