For some service providers, digitising documents and books for reproduction or archiving is a cost-intensive, unproductive job, while for others it is a lucrative customer order. The main difference is that most systems for scanning are not up to the challenge. Either the scanner cannot handle auto-segmentation of text and halftone images—page-by-page at high scan rate—or the software for preparation and make-ready of scanned pages is cumbersome or inadequate. Often, more than one software application must be used to perform all the functions required to obtain the final result. Examples of such functions are automated deskewing, putting all pages in register, fully automated processes driven by macros and hot folders, and import of images and pages in a wide variety of file formats. |
