Speech Michel Frequin and Tom Egelund
International press conference at Océ OpenHouse 2005
This is the written text of the presentation held by Mr Michel Frequin, Executive Vice President Océ Digital Document Systems and Mr Tom Egelund, Executive Vice President Océ Wide Format Printing Systems during a press conference in Poing, Germany on 1 March 2005 at Océ OpenHouse 2005.

Michel Frequin:

Good morning.
Océ is focused on the business success of our customers. For Océ Digital Document Systems, that means on key professional environments.

In corporate printing, it means document workflow in the high-end office, in the central printroom and in transaction printing.
In commercial printing, it means Digital Print Providers, or Printshops, Marketing Services and Graphic Arts. And Océ Business Services provides complete document outsourcing to our corporate customers.

Tom Egelund:
In Wide Format, Océ Technical Document Systems really are the Choice of Professionals. In corporate printing we drive workflows in the engineering office and the printroom. In commercial printing we are a leading supplier in wide format for reprographers, and for productive display graphics systems.
We support all activities with a broad range of imaging supplies.
This morning we would like to tell you about the latest developments in these environments. In fact, they will serve as the build-up of this presentation.
We are going to look at what customers want to achieve. We're going to unveil our latest hardware and software. We are going to show you how Océ is helping our customers achieve some remarkable things.

Michel Frequin:
Today, you'll find Océ office solutions in many of the world's largest enterprises and public organisations. We know what customers need.

They want to reduce document costs, which average around 15% of their expenditures according to industry analysts. They want to make printing easy for employees. They want to help people do more with information, and faster.

To achieve this, we introduced the Océ Professional Office Programme, a bundling of our hardware, software and services. At Openhouse, we launch our new Océ PRISMA architecture. Six suites focused on customer environments, starting with Océ PRISMA for Office. A key component of this output management solution is Océ PRISMAsatellite for Office. It gives our customers unique functionality to measure and manage document workflow in the office.

And at the core of this programme is our VarioPrint line of multifunctional, production-class hardware systems. One highlight here.
Data and document security is one of the greatest challenges facing IT professionals. Océ has invested heavily in security. Yesterday at OpenHouse, nine of our systems were awarded the important Common Criteria Certification, an independent IT Security Certificate.

One customer is making huge savings with Océ in the office. Lockheed Martin is an IT company providing services to many large US companies. They use PRISMA to manage Océ and non-Océ office printers. With it, they help large, multimillion dollar enterprises save up to 30% on document costs. Now, experts agree that 15% of revenue is spent on document production, management and distribution. So you can imagine the six-digit-plus savings here.

Tom Egelund:
We see similar developments in the engineering office. Océ is a leading supplier of Technical Document Systems.

Our customers need to shorten product development or construction cycles, and reduce costs. Technical document workflows are increasingly digital. Colour print volumes are on the rise. Workflows are shifting from 'print and distribute' to 'distribute, view and print'. As a result, decentral printing volumes are increasing. Easy access to convenient and economical printers is key.

So is smart document workflow, driven by our Océ Print Exec Workgroup software. It helps our customer's streamline workflow. With a few mouse clicks, they create and send sets of multi-format, multi-application documents to a departmental printer. Without opening the applications. Without manual sorting after printing. This saves vast amounts of time and money. It gets the right information to the places it needs to be. Thousands of architects, designers and engineers are using it.
Despite the shift to digital workflows, there's still a huge need for traditional wide format copying. That's why we are previewing the new Océ TDS100 here at OpenHouse, prior to the summer launch.
There is a market for many thousands of these convenient, economical products in the coming years. We are confident of that. It's what professionals around the world need, in black in white.
We also address the demand for more productive wide format colour in the office. Last year we introduced the Océ TCS400 colour copier-printer. Its productivity, flexibility and user friendliness set it apart.

One Océ TCS400 is an indispensable tool at a local authority in Union County, North Carolina. Traditional inkjet printers could not handle the growing workload. The Océ TCS400 does.
The property services department uses it to print maps. The Sheriff's department uses it to print patrol zones. The emergency centre produces maps to search for missing children. And today we are announce new productivity features. I tell you about them in a moment.

Michel Frequin:
Interesting things are going on in the office. But you should see what's happening down in the basement. In the Central Repro Department, or Printroom as we call it. In the last 10 years, large companies have become networked. It looked like print volumes would shift to departmental printers. Why take a hardcopy down to the Central Repro, when you could print in your department? But rumours on the death of the printroom were premature. Today it can be a critical link in enterprise workflow. If it meets a few conditions.

People in the printroom must perform like professionals, so internal clients can rely on them and send more print jobs. Printrooms must enhance the services they offer beyond printing: like scanning, archiving and finishing.
They need to keep their production high and their costs down. And, in these times of core business, there is always the threat of outsourcing. So printrooms must add value to the organisation.

As a company focused on production printing, the printroom is a strategic priority for Océ. We are taking an aggressive approach with product concepts and marketing actions, to confront our large competitors. When it comes to the printroom, ladies and gentlemen, X marks the spot for Océ. That's why we launched the Professional Printroom Programme. And today we launch the new Océ PRISMA for Printrooms. It taps the value of the printroom, with unique workflow functionality to and from our hardware systems.

Like the new Océ VarioPrint 5160 Advanced high volume printer. It combines Custom-tone printing, multiple Page Description Languages, and multiple host and server connectivity. Then there's the Océ VarioPrint 2110 mid production printer. Recent press coverage says it offers 'more bang for the buck' than its closest competitors.
And here at OpenHouse, you can see the new VarioPrint 2100, Scalable Production Printing for Professionals. This 91 ppm system has a smart modular configuration concept, to add paper handling, finishing and productivity capabilities. It offer customers a clear growth path to protect investments.
Black & white is important in the printroom, and colour is crucial. That's why, we are also launching the Océ Colour Production System 800. Customer installations started two months ago, and the reactions are fantastic. It's the universal printer-copier for mixed colour and black & white documents. What's more, output on our CPS systems integrate seamlessly with workflow on our VarioPrint machines. The result is high-quality mixed documents with tabs, colour inserts or covers.

You can see all this at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, a new Océ customer. They are producing mixed black &white and colour course material like this. (MFR holds up)
What's more, they have achieved uniform operations across central and satellite printrooms. The ordering process has been standardised and improved. All with the Professional Printroom Programme.

Tom Egelund:
Today, there's a trend toward decentral printing in wide format.
But the role of the printroom is changing, not disappearing.

To attract volumes, the printroom must provide excellent service and productive printing, using a wider range of systems. It must do this at lower costs and with fewer people. We help our printroom customers keep their customers happy.

The Océ TDS600 is the number one system for wide format in the printroom. But professionals need better ways to manage workflow. That's why we offer Océ Account Center software.
It lets printrooms charge production costs to projects and individual departments. At the end of this year we will expand our software with Océ PRISMAengineering. It makes managing multi-format, multi-vendor systems in one location more convenient and more cost-effective than ever.

We are also increasing the productivity of our Océ TCS400. Here at OpenHouse we are launching three enhancements. A third roll for greater flexibility and autonomous print capacity. A copy receiving rack for unattended or overnight printing. And an inline folder.

What is more critical than safety standards at a power plant?
Axpo is a leading energy supplier in Switzerland. To ensure safety, information must be accessible quickly and Axpo's central printroom plays a crucial role. Inefficient plotting was wasting 300 square metres of media day. With Océ software and TDS systems, internal customers now request prints online and document costs are more transparent.
Axpo is getting vital information where it's needed, with higher productivity, better service and a 25% drop in media usage. That's Printing for Professionals in the wide format printroom.

Michel Frequin:
Security is key in the printroom, and in transaction printing, such as statements, invoices, delivery notes and shipping papers.

As a market leader in continuous feed transaction printing, we know customers want to add impact to their documents. So recipients respond faster. That means design possibilities and colour. They must ensure data integrity and security. Maximise operational efficiency. Improve communication effectiveness. And integrate e-channels. We help them do that. Here at Océ OpenHouse we have new introductions for high volume, centralised printing and for distributed network printing.

To address both, we are introducing the Océ Professional Transaction Programme. We are launching dedicated software for centralised Transaction Printing: Océ PRISMA for Transaction. It's the state of the art in variable data printing, based on our award-winning PRISMAproduction platform.

It powers the full range of Océ continuous-feed printers, including the new Océ VarioStream 7450 and 7550 triplex. These next generation system prints two toners on one side and one toner on the other. This gives transaction documents the added impact. We complete the 5000 Series with VarioPrint 5140 at 140 ppm.

Then there is networked, distributed printing, an important trend for our customers. That's why we are launching Océ PRISMA for ERP. Software for Enterprise Resource Planning, like S.A.P, is used by virtually every large organisation. Océ PRISMA for ERP streamlines production, with functionality to design documents, create e-forms and manage output. It supports our cutsheet printers, including the newest systems here at OpenHouse.
To address convergence even better: the VarioPrint 5160 Advanced. It handles all printroom applications with a single printer. It features Océ CustomTone, MICR and standard toner.
And the Océ VarioPrint 3110 joins the 3070/3090 models to complete our 3000 family. These are rugged, cutsheet printers for producing transaction documents on the spot, where our customer's need them.

Like the Mediterranean Shipping Company,
It has over 200 vessels shipping goods all over the world. Information flow is crucial. Until recently, MSC's printing processes were too labour intensive and prone to errors. Océ distributed printing, driven by PRISMA, now ensures that shipping documents are accurate and delivered within 24 hours.
In this business, accuracy and timing are everything.

Tom Egelund:
Transaction Printing is all about documents with impact. Impact is also where Océ Imaging Supplies come in. Océ is the world's biggest supplier of wide format media.

At our Venlo headquarters, we have the largest converting facility in Europe. This year, Océ will sell enough media to cover 100,000 soccer fields. Most is Océ branded and used on our own plain paper systems and CAD machines. But a growing amount is sold via trading partners for use on competitor machines. Océ Imaging Supplies aims to be a market leader in display graphics supplies as well, for small and wide format.
So what's the news?
Colour on speciality media is the application for professionals. For corporate printrooms it's an added service to internal clients. For commercial printers it's a new service and high margin business. That why we are launching Océ self-adhesive vinyl, which spearheads our offensive in display graphics. It combines with our systems, services and other supplies to reinforce our position as a one-stop shop. It's designed for production on the Océ CS6060, and on competitive systems.
TEG holds up self-adhesive vinyl  with picture of MFR!
Here's an example.
What do you think of this, Michel? You look good in wide format.

Michel Frequin:
(holds up A3 with picture of beautiful girl)
I think it looks great. But I've got one too, Tom. It's a bit smaller, but I know which one I prefer!

Ladies and gentlemen, this is our new MC machine coated, structured paper, introduced here at OpenHouse. Colour specialities in small format are also a hot topic. Digital printing is the strong growth market in graphic arts. That not only requires the right printers. But also the right media, to deliver offset look and feel. The print I just showed you was produced on our new structured paper using the Océ CPS900 Digital Colour Press.

And here's another example. (MFR show Colour Quality Brochure)
Our Colour Quality Brochure with four different offset media.
Stamp Media in Kiel, Germany, uses this to generate new business: high quality brochures, printed digitally on demand, with offset look and feel.

Applications like this are what Digital Print Providers need.
A market with heavy competition and over-capacities.
It's vital for Digital Print Providers to differentiate themselves.
That means offering value added services and improving customer relationships to capitalise on outsourcing trends.
Corporate customers want proof that their marketing budgets are spent wisely. Digital Print Providers can give them that proof through personalisation and high quality media. That's why Océ focuses on printshop applications for the communications market, corporate customers and advertising.

We bundle applications into one integrated proposition in the Océ Professional Printshop Programme, introduced here today.
And also new today, Web-enabled Océ PRISMA for Printshops, including our True2Print software for managing customer files.
It streamlines workflow, enables printshops to introduce new services easily, and helps win new business.

We're helping Digital Print Providers win with colour. The Océ CPS family already offers superb quality. Now we take that a step higher with the Platinum platform, a new standard for our Océ CPS800 and 900 Digital Colour Press. It provides smoother, sharper prints on a wider range of media. The kind of quality that convinces customers.

They know all about convincing customers at Tierps Tryckeri. It's the first Digital Print Provider in Sweden to become an Océ quality Centre, an innovative co-branding concept to help printshops build their business. Companies like Tierps want to print on custom and oversized paper formats, and on tabs.
They find this functionality in the new release of the Océ VarioPrint 2110. Only Océ offers this combination of features on a single system. In fact Tierps is using Océ Copy Press and Océ colour technology to produce a whole range of collaterals on demand.
(Holds up brochure printed by Tierps)
Print products like brochures, flyers and mailings.
In short and long runs, with different levels of personalisation, on special, structured media.
Customers tell us that colour output like this, on media like this, is what sets Océ apart!

Tom Egelund:
Océ is also helping Reprographers win the battle for customers.
Reprographers want to grow their business and profits.

But they face strong competition for volumes, and price erosion.
To cope, they must either become true production centres or diversify their services. Whatever their growth strategy, they must improve turnaround times and offer better quality. They need systems that save on labour and give a good return on investment.

In our approach to commercial reprographics we focus on managing workflow from end to end. We provide unparalleled machine uptimes and unmatched quality, so reprographers can offer the best service. Our systems last much long longer than our competitors, thanks to rugged design as well as software and functionality upgrades.
To manage workflow, Océ ReproDesk 2.0 is the latest version of our print automation software for Commercial Reprographics. For architects working with AutoCAD, ReproDesk 2.0 will make it easier to submit jobs electronically. For reprographers, the software will make workflow more productive and efficient.
We are launching it later this year, but we are giving you a sneak preview here at OpenHouse.

Here at OpenHouse we show the new Océ TDS800 Pro Series.
It offers everything for the printing professional who wants continuous wide format productivity. That means high machine uptime, near-offset print quality, full configurability and the option to upgrade in the future. Take a look on the Digital Print Providers stand.

If any reprographer knows about the Océ proposition it's Service Point Solutions in Barcelona. It provides document management for every step in the construction process. Here's what the CEO had to say.
'I think for us what is very valuable in our partnership with Océ is, we share views on how to develop the industry, how to move forward.'
Developing the industry and moving customers forward! The Choice of Professionals in this market!

Michel Frequin:
Océ is driving commercial reprographics. The same is true in Marketing Services. We virtually created this market by applying digital printing to direct mail production. Around the world companies are slashing advertising budgets. But not their budgets for direct marketing, which are growing 6% annually according to the Statistical Handbook for the Graphic Arts Industry. Océ is going to grow with it.

We are driving the convergence of transaction and marketing mail into 1-on-1 customer communication. We know customers are looking for value-added, one-stop campaign management. We know they want cost-efficiency and factory automation.

Our Marketing Services Programme helps them do this. Central is Océ PRISMA, the market's foremost workflow tool. Combined with our hardware, it offers everything needed to create documents, run campaigns and automate responses.

Last year, we introduced the Océ VarioStream 9000. This high performance, continuous feed system offers a growth path from black & white to colour. Last year we introduced the basic, black & white engine. It's been a great success. It is one of the best black & white duplex systems on the market. In the meantime we have released the 9220 version for double sided printing that combines black with blue or magenta. Today we have customers on three continents printing over 500 million feet on the VarioStream 9210 and 9220.
That's enough to circle the globe nearly four times! And there's more to come in this Colour on Demand concept. The VarioStream 9000 joins our other backbone printers in Marketing Services, the VarioStream 7000, the VarioPrint 5000 and the CPS900.

National Business Systems is a printing and mailing house in Minneapolis in the USA. At peak times, it produces 15 million documents a month. NBS wanted to introduce new technology so they could handle jobs with colour, advanced finishing and fast turnaround times. They chose PRISMA's variable data printing capabilities, along with the VarioPrint 5000 and the VarioStream 7000. These systems help automate workflow end to end, and add new revenue streams. The company is winning new business through innovation, responsiveness, quality and service.

Tom Egelund:
Marketing Services is all about getting attention and response.
The same is true of display graphics. This is the market for outdoor advertising, point-of-purchase materials, posters, banners and displays. Océ is one of the few players in display graphics to offer a complete package of hardware, software, services and supplies. It's a proposition we call Partnership Included.

Today there is a shift from traditional solvent inks to UV-curable and eco-solvent inks. There is also a move towards direct printing on uncoated substrates and increased use of non-paper based media. Digital flatbed printers enable customers to print directly on uncoated media. This reduces finishing time and related production costs. And with their ability to print on non-traditional substrates, flatbed printers offer opportunities for new growth.

Since it's introduction in 2003, the Océ Arizona T220 flatbed has been used to print on a wide range of materials. Customers produce displays on vinyl, glass, plywood and more. Now the Arizona T220 is being used to produce 3D signs. First the flat, unformed substrate is printed using special inks. Then it's vacuum formed into the desired shape. This can reduce the cost of manufacturing by up to 80%. It makes these products affordable for a much larger market.

Kahmann-Frilla Lichtwerbung in Vienna used to make 3D signs by screen pressing them before moulding or painting afterwards.
Now they use the Arizona T220. This increased their productivity and profitability dramatically. Océ is redefining the business of 3D sign printing. In fact, please take a look right behind you for 3D proof.

Michel Frequin:
Océ is creating new opportunities in display graphics, and in
Graphic Arts. Products here include books, instruction manuals, product packaging and newspapers. The graphic industry is in a state of fundamental change. The booming technology is digital printing. And that's where Océ comes in.

We know the migration from offset to digital is driving the market.
So is the need for value added services, the ability to handle variable content, just in time fulfillment and short runs.

The new web-enabled Océ PRISMA for PoD is an end-to-end workflow tool. It's compatible with both Océ and competitor machines. It supports state of the art e-ordering.

Together with the Océ VarioStream 7000 and 9000, it spearheads our proposition in Graphic Arts. Complementing offset. We help customers compete through short-run digital production. They can add variable information to pre-printed mailings, newsletters, and other applications.  For traditional printers, that's a cost-effective way to add variable data to existing colour work. Many black & white jobs need colour inserts and covers. The Océ CPS900 Digital Colour Press based on the Platinum platform is perfect here. So we are complementing offset in colour printing as well.

Offset Paperback Manufacturers in Pennsylvania, the USA, produces over 350 million books a year for major publishers like Pearson, one of the world's top 3. They specialise in high volume, mass market paperbacks, all printed with offset presses.
Today they are using PRISMA for PoD with six VarioStream 7650s to print short-run books on demand. These systems help them profit from the growing demand for shorter runs and generate new business. It proves our power in Graphic Arts.

Just like newspaper printing with the Océ Digital Newspaper Network, for worldwide Day A delivery and regional news.
At the Olympic in Athens, Océ and its partners produced more than 150,000 copies of International newspapers. Famous titles like the Financial Times, the New York Times, Sydney Morning Herald, De Volkskrant and Asahi. On the Digital Newspaper Network stand, you'll find the latest editions, including the first colour newspaper on the VarioStream 9000.

Michel shows Die Welt Compact
Here's a copy of 'Die Welt Compact' printed in two colours.
It looks spectacular! So please take a look. You will also find personalised papers on the Océ CPS900. Océ is redefining professional printing.

Tom Egelund:
Ladies and gentlemen, and the end of all this is document outsourcing with Océ Business Services. This is a large market, still growing by some 5% per year according to our projections.
More and more organisations are concentrating on their core business and outsourcing other activities to specialists. Outsourcing of printing and document management can generate innovation, cost savings and productivity increases.

Michel Frequin:
Océ Business Services offers a complete answer for document outsourcing. From mailroom and office services to full document and output management, in wide and small format. The result is continuous improvement to document processes according to mutually agreed targets.

Océ Business Services is one of the top document management organisations in the world. Today, companies like Philips Electronics, Rolls Royce, General Electric and the Boeing Company have all chosen Océ. Complete printing and document services for Professionals!

Tom Egelund:
So it's no wonder the OpenHouse hall is packed every year. Our customers know they will find what they are looking for: Concrete answers to real business challenges.

Michel Frequin:
We hope that you find what you are looking for too. No one focuses on Printing for Professionals like Océ. On corporate printing. And commercial printing. It's all waiting for you in the OpenHouse hall. So we hope you enjoy your day with us.

Thank you.
