IWCO – The Instant Web Companies
Océ versatility helps IWCO do more with less
The Instant Web Companies (IWCO), headquartered in Chanhassen, MN, provide integrated direct mail solutions, including creative services, web printing, data processing, personalisation, mailing, and logistics management. ‘We look at needs based on the total package, which could include a form, inserts, business reply card, plastic loyalty card, envelope, colour and personalisation’, explains Jim Leone, IWCO operations vice president supervising both manufacturing and data processing.
“This technology lets us expand our scope of services, increase throughput, respond to customer needs, and be more selective about future markets that fit our objectives”
Jim Leone, IWCO operations vice president
IWCO wanted to consolidate its lettershop services to support the expansion of its total package direct mail business. Three separate manufacturing platforms—print, envelope, and mailing—were combined into one operation. “We realised there would be immediate and significant cost benefits for our customers by eliminating redundancy,” says Leone.

Today IWCO consistently produces 80 million total personalised packages a month. Océ digital solutions provide the high volume, leading edge printing capabilities that help IWCO add distinction to their customers’ direct mail campaigns and increase the company’s competitive offering and revenue growth.
Two Océ VarioStream 7650 CX Twin pinless systems have helped IWCO centralise resources, increase capacity, and expand its personalisation offering. “Before we added the Océ equipment, duplexing and MICR personalisation were bottlenecks,” Leone says. “Now we can pursue larger blocks of this business—which carries a premium in the marketplace—by enabling more targeted messages for our clients.”

Reducing costs while increasing service
“This centralised model is driving out costs,” adds Leone. “We don’t have to ship components, and we can reduce the number of people needed to co-ordinate the workflow. Overall these technology improvements save time, increase capacity, and lower costs.

“The consolidation of our lettershop services and our increased personalisation capacity will drive flexibility, cost savings and cycle time reduction for our direct marketer customers,” he said. “With the Océ equipment, we have fewer scheduling constraints and can personalise more Instant Web Companies documents in less time, further reducing production cycle time for clients.” As a result, IWCO is better able to meet their customers’ personalisation needs.

“Océ technology lets us offer better service for our customers. For example, if we can condense the cycle time from generating artwork to development to delivery, our customers can get responses more quickly,” says Leone. “The VarioStream 7650 CX is faster, so we can reduce cycle time and get into production faster.” The Océ solution features quick-change adaptability and is designed for fast, efficient changeovers to reduce labour requirements and further speed workflow.

$150,000 annual paper savings
“Océ was selected based on capabilities such as duplex and MICR imaging, pinless operation, and range of paper sizes and weights,” explains Leone. Océ flexibility and power enable production-class performance in the centralised IWCO operation without requiring investment in lots of systems or sacrificing valuable floor space.

The Océ VarioStream 7650cx includes a number of capabilities that translate into greater productivity and cost savings, such as pinless paper transport to reduce waste. “We found that just by eliminating the 1/2” of trimmed waste on each side of a form, we could save $150,000 a year in paper, plus gain the ability to handle wider paper stock,” Leone notes.

Investment with maximum versatility
The Océ VarioStream family features production-class systems that offer the greatest capacity and adaptability and some of the lowest operating costs in the industry. With Océ, data centre and commercial printing experts like IWCO get efficiency they can count on. Futureproof VarioStream solutions are the most upgradeable production-class printing systems available resulting in an investment with maximum versatility.

Scalable from 191 to nearly 1,300 letter images per minute, Océ VarioStream digital printing systems are built to cost-effectively handle transaction, publishing, and complex convergent applications. Every model delivers superior imaging technology and advanced paper transport options. Users benefit from Océ CustomTone® ink support, highlight colour, MICR, and high-speed black and white printing, with flexible speed switching for convergent environments. Consistent copy press grade output lets IWCO provide its customers with total quality assurance.

Flexibility for more opportunities
“This technology lets us expand our scope of services, increase throughput, respond to customer needs, and be more selective about future markets that fit our objectives,” Leone says. Océ technology helps them pursue new market segments, such as statement mailing and 2/1 colour.

“The Océ system’s outstanding highlight 2/1 colour capabilities give us the lead in that area.” Cross-vendor print support helps eradicate redundancies. The ability of the Océ systems to handle different data streams enables IWCO to support nearly any job that comes in without special programming. “The ability to handle many jobs within one platform is also key, and Océ equipment lets us be creative in the things we can do,” he explains. With predictable speed, efficient workflow software, and whole-cost advantages, Océ customers like The Instant Web Companies are ready for whatever comes their way.
